Superfoods for Kids: Fun Foods to Keep Kids Healthy

When you think of antioxidants and superfoods, chances are you think of food that you would enjoy. Kids can enjoy these super healthy foods, too. Here are a few of the best superfoods for children and how to serve them.

Blueberries. These are tasty as is and children love them! Toss a bowl in the freezer for a frozen treat, stir them into pancake batter or blend them into a yummy smoothie with bananas and yogurt. They’re also great sprinkled over cereal of any kind to add antioxidants and vitamins.

Spinach. Greens can be difficult to fit into a child’s diet, since they tend to be resistant to the color, so start early. Babies can enjoy spinach puree mixed with carrots or sweet potatoes. Older kids might like it in a monster smoothie, blended with berries and bananas. You can also puree it and add it to pizza sauce, pasta sauce and other strongly colored foods to give kids an extra dose of iron and fiber.

Yogurt. Many children like yogurt already, so it isn’t hard to add a bit more to your diet. Look for plain yogurt to avoid sugar and just toss in some fruits. Add a little brown sugar or honey and some cinnamon for a tasty dip that goes very well with apple slices and grapes. You can also blend yogurt into soups for a creamier base that is super healthy and filled with protein and calcium.

Avocadoes. We tend to use avocadoes for guacamole, but they have many other uses! Make them into a creamy soup (another good way to use some yogurt), blend with chocolate to make a sweet mousse, or even whip up an avocado pie! Kids will love this vitamin packed fruit just plain, too. Sprinkle with lemon juice to prevent browning and let them eat it by the slice.

These are just a few of the superfoods that are out there, but they are all excellent for growing bodies and brains. Just because kids are smaller doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get the benefits of awesome food. Think of them next time you’re looking at a list of superfoods and see what they can eat, too.
