How to Make Your Own Condiments

Have you ever run out of mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, tartar sauce or shrimp sauce? Keep these recipes on hand for a quick remedy. You’ll be surprised at how easy they are to make.

 

Mayonnaise

 

Ingredients:

¾ cup of vegetable or canola oil. (If you can find a healthier cooking oil, like flax, all the better, but they aren’t widely available.)

1 egg

2 tablespoons of vinegar

½ teaspoon of mustard powder

1 cloved of minced garlic

a dash of salt

 

Add ¼ cup of the oil and all the other ingredients to a blender and blend on low speed for a few seconds – until all the ingredients are mixed well. Then, slowly add the remaining oil, until you have the consistancy of salad dressing.

 

This recipe can easily vary in taste, with the addition one or more other ingredients. Try a variety of different herbs from time to time. Add sage for chicken salad sandwich, or Basil for leafy summer salad with sliced tomatoes.

Ketchup or Ketsup or Catsup

 

Whatever you call it, it’s easy to make in the last minute for a few people at lunch or dinner. This is the quick and easy method. You can add more sugar or less, more vinegar or less, depending on your taste buds.

 

Ingredients

¾ cups of tomato sauce

1 teaspoon of sugar

1 teaspoon of vinegar

¼ teaspoon of salt

Blend it well until smooth and it will be ready to use.

Hot Dog and Hamburger Relish

 

Most people love a bit of relish on their hot dogs and hamburgers. It’s a North American tradition. This is the simple recipe.

 

Ingredients

¾ cup finely-chopped dill pickle

¼ cup sweet mustard

½ teaspoon of vinegar

 

Combine and mix.

Shrimp Sauce

 

Shrimp sauce is another simple recipe. Why buy it at all when you can make it so easily?

It’s just one part ketchup to four parts horseradish, blended together. The amounts are only dependant on how much you need.

Tartar Sauce

 

Tartar sauce can be made simply too. Mix one part mayonnaise to four parts sweet relish. Mix it together well and serve it with seafood.

It’s easy to make fresh homemade condiments without filling your refridgerator with jars and bottles. All the simple recipes above include things you would normally have at hand anyway. Even some of the ingredients themselves can be made simply. Homemade has less preservatives too.
